Maximize Your RV Experience with SolarFlex 600i-L: A Comprehensive Guide

Keystone RV has teamed up with Future Solutions to share valuable information about the SolarFlex 600i-L System. Learn the basics of solar energy, how to operate the system, and features that will help you conserve energy during your next adventure.

Solar Basics

The SolarFlex 600i-L system is typically installed in the front storage compartment of a fifth wheel, while travel trailers have it in the front pass-thru compartment. Although the components are located differently, they connect in the same way.

Steps to Start Your Solar System

Follow these three easy steps to get your solar system up and running:

  1. Turn on the Battery Disconnect: This provides 12-volt power to the entire RV.
  2. Turn on the Inverter Disconnect: This allows 12-volt power from the batteries to reach the inverter.
  3. Turn on the Inverter Switch: You now have AC power (120V) for wired outlets and the air conditioning unit.

With these steps, your system is operating and ready to use. RVs provide both 120V and DC power inside.

Using the Victron Connect App

  1. Download the App: Get the Victron Connect App on your mobile device.
  2. Locate Your Devices: Match the components listed in your RV with those in the app.
  3. Set Up a Cerbo Connection: Scan the QR code to connect to Wi-Fi.
  4. Wake Up Lithium Batteries: If you don't see the devices in the app, your batteries may be in protection mode and need to be awakened.

Monitoring Your Energy Usage

When your RV is running on batteries, it's important to monitor energy usage. The app shows the following:

  • Current charge percentage
  • Estimated hours remaining
  • Current power draw

Start by running the slide-outs while observing the power usage. Set the A/C to cool and note the increase in amps and time remaining. Understanding your energy consumption before venturing out to boondock will help you avoid draining your lithium batteries.

When you plug into shore power, the inverter switches to charging mode. There's a short delay as the inverter qualifies incoming energy, and you’ll see positive numbers indicating a state of charge.

Components of the 600i-L System

The 600i-L comes with a standard package including:

  • 600 watts of solar: Two 300-watt solar panels
  • Docking port: For future expansion
  • One GC3 DragonFly Energy Battery: 270 Amp Hours
  • Victron 3000 Watt Multiplus Inverter
  • Victron 50 Amp SmartSolar Charge Controller
  • Victron Smart Shunt
  • Battery Guardian

Can I Run My A/C with the 600i-L?

Solar energy alone does not run appliances; it charges the batteries. The inverter converts battery power to run the A/C and receptacles. Remember, you need the right combination of components: Inverter + Battery + Solar = A/C operation.

Getting the Most Out of Solar Energy

Factors like clouds, sunshine, trees, and campground locations can affect solar energy generation. Position your panels to optimize energy collection during peak sunlight hours. Open, sunny areas will yield more energy than shaded regions.

Maintaining the 600i-L System

  • Panels: When cool, rinse solar panels with water and wipe off dust. Avoid heavy soaps and do not run cold water on hot panels.

Expanding Your Battery Bank

Yes, Keystone RVs are designed to accommodate two batteries for future expansion. There’s also a docking port for additional solar panels and space for an extra amp charger. Consult your local dealer for expansion options and pricing.

Long-Term Storage Procedures for Solar

Before long-term storage, do the following:

  1. Charge the batteries.
  2. Shut off the inverter.
  3. Turn off the inverter disconnect and the 12-volt battery disconnect.

Do not disconnect the solar; it will continue to charge and maintain the lithium battery.

Cold Weather Considerations for Lithium Batteries

Lithium batteries generate internal heat to function in colder temperatures, but they won’t charge below freezing. If necessary, activate the battery heating feature to allow charging in colder conditions.

Energy Consumption Awareness

You cannot use the solar system arbitrarily; monitor your power usage and battery storage. Understanding energy consumption is crucial for effective system management.
