How to Connect Your RV Shore Cord: A Step-by-Step Guide

A shore cord is a heavy-duty electrical cord designed to connect your RV directly to a power source, ensuring a reliable supply of electricity while camping. This guide will explain how to hook up power to your trailer safely and efficiently.

What is a Shore Cord?

The shore cord connects your RV's power converter to an external electrical service, typically a 120-volt 30 amp (3 prong) or a 50 amp (4 prong) outlet. It features a molded, weatherproof assembly that guarantees a safe ground connection.

Shore Cord Variants

  • Permanent Wiring: Some RVs have the power cord wired directly into the electrical system.
  • Detachable Cords: These cords can be removed for easy storage and transport.

Note: While 50 amp cords may be rated for 240-volt service, our RVs are not wired for that voltage.

Connecting Your Shore Cord

  1. Check the Power Supply:
  2. Ensure the site power source breakers are OFF (both legs for 50-amp service). If inaccessible, turn OFF the main breakers inside the RV.
  3. Attach the Cord:
  4. Insert the plug into the site source receptacle, ensuring it is seated completely (twist and lock feature).
  5. Power On:
  6. Turn the site source breakers ON. Turn the RV main breakers ON. If applicable, turn the Battery Disconnect ON.

Understanding Amperage Ratings

Be aware that if the campground only has 30 amp service, even a 50 amp RV can only use 30 amps, which may limit the operation of multiple appliances, including air conditioners. It's advisable to call ahead to check the available amperage at your campsite.

Adapters and Extension Cords

  • Adapters: Special adapters allow connections to lower service ratings (e.g., 50 amp to 30 amp). However, your power availability will be limited to the adapter's rating.
  • Extension Cords: If using an extension cord is necessary, ensure it is the correct size (e.g., a 30 amp, 10 gauge cord no longer than 50 feet). Avoid using adapters or chaining multiple cords together.

Final Thoughts

For further information on your RV’s electrical system, refer to Chapter 8 of your Owner’s Manual. Properly connecting your shore cord ensures that you can enjoy all the features of your RV with confidence and safety.
